Story

On Saturday, September 30, Mason Kumley (a freshman at Mount Vernon High School) went to his homecoming dance with no concerns. That very next day, Sunday, October 1, some abdominal pain landed him in the emergency room in Cedar Rapids. Within a few hours, he was on the oncology floor of the Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City. What a difference a day makes.

Unfortunately, the biopsy showed a cancerous tumor in his abdomen, pushing on his kidneys and bladder. Mason was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. It is often found in children. Mason's first round of chemotherapy was administered on October 17, and he has at least 12 more weeks of chemo. The hope is his tumor will shrink so that is can be removed. Radiation will follow chemo and Mason's condition will be reassessed to created new treatment plans. The Kumley family has a long road ahead of them. Mason is a fighter and he will fight with all his might!
